Stick Gym is a collection of exercises devoted to developing strength, speed, dexterity, and endurance in drumming. These “workouts” use patterned material designed to be relatively simple to learn and encourage the player to repeat phrases longer than one typically would. Tempi have been left off the music entirely to allow players the freedom to start as slow as needed and the opportunity to continually reimagine the top tempo. These exercises can be learned in any order. Players should target particular deficiencies by studying specific workouts that relate. In my own playing and teaching, each exercise takes around thirty minutes to complete. With that time frame in mind, the player should start slow enough and increase the tempo steadily so that the maximum tempo is reached at the end of a half-hour.
